Bilingualism

Le bilingualism
at the heart of our educational project

Proficiency in several languages is essential for international exchanges, both in everyday life and in the professional world, and is a decisive advantage for access to universities in France and abroad.

At the Lycée International Montessori Athena, language learning is a way of opening up to the world. Our pupils reach a high level in French and English thanks to daily immersion from nursery school onwards.

They acquire an excellent level of English thanks to immersion from Year 6.th.

French-English bilingualism is the basis of our teaching

At the Lycée International Montessori Athena, teaching is bilingual in English and French from nursery school and throughout primary school. Children have as many hours in French as in English with teachers who teach in their mother tongue. They study all subjects in the second language: language, mathematics (in nursery), geography, science and art.

In primary school, they prepare for the Cambridge «Young Learners» exams, which they sit as soon as they are ready (after agreement with their families).

In collège and seconde, students have a minimum of 6 hours of English per week, with preparation for the Cambridge exams. This language support is adapted to each student's level and pace.

Cambridge exam preparation

From primary level upwards, students prepare for the Cambridge exams (Young Learners), with our school being an exam centre. Pupils achieve excellent results with 100 % of 5/5 in oral expression.

The school & nature

Every week, our nursery and primary school pupils spend half a day learning in the forest, the park or the vegetable garden.

The Montessori approach and the School in Nature approach share a number of fundamental principles designed to encourage children's self-fulfilment and the overall development of their skills. That's why we make it a point of honour to offer a School in Nature session every week.

Learning from experience

Just as Montessori's pedagogy emphasises the manipulation of concrete materials, the nature school offers children the opportunity to learn through direct experience by exploring their natural environment.

Autonomy and freedom

School in nature allows children to take the initiative in their learning by exploring nature in their own way. Both approaches respect each child's individual pace.

Connecting with nature

The Montessori method stresses the importance of a prepared environment, while the nature school offers children the opportunity to connect directly with their natural surroundings.

School and nature at Athéna

Pupils in nursery and elementary classes spend a minimum of half a day each week at the in the forest, in parks or in our school vegetable garden.

But this is happening with a very specific educational programme. We want the pupils to learn science, maths, reading, writing, etc. in both English and French. And every time, we realise that children learn much better in nature.

Pupils in the elementary classes also follow a very specific vegetable garden programme. They sow seeds, take cuttings, plant, harvest and decide on the future of their plants, etc.

These convergences make the Montessori pedagogy and the school in nature complementary choices that offer enriching learning experiences and promote balanced, holistic development in children.

Our educational values

A caring and respectful approach is at the heart of our teaching, from nursery to high school.

Respecting everyone's pace

Every child has his or her own rhythm of development. It is therefore essential to respect this rhythm so as to always meet the needs of the moment.

Good listening

The adults always listen in a caring way. This constant attention ensures that every child feels understood and supported.

Self-confidence and autonomy

Every effort is made to enable children to develop their full potential. self-confidence and autonomy. These are two of the core values of the Montessori pedagogy that are essential for a happy and fulfilled life.

Respect for self and others

Respect for oneself and for others is at the heart of our teaching methods. In this way, everyone can progress with confidence and harmony.

Creativity and artistic development

Creativity and artistic development are important values in our schools. They are promoted in particular through the teaching of music and art.

Bilingualism from an early age

From an early age, children are immersed in a bilingual environment (English-French). This enables them to learn a second language as well as their mother tongue.

Freedom to be yourself

In our caring schools, pupils enjoy the freedom to be themselves and to evolve in this micro-society with no constraints other than respect. We're talking about self-respect, respect for the environment, respect for others, respect for the adult teacher and the school curriculum.

Support for exam preparation

Exam preparation is based on rigorous, structured and caring support. Thanks to progressive, individualised tutoring, students can consolidate what they have learnt in a calm environment, enabling them to approach exams with confidence, control and without undue stress.

Resources used

Several weeks of mock exams and mock bacs are organised throughout the year to personalise the help offered to students.

Mock exams supervised by an external jury

External professionals conduct mock orals under exam conditions and provide targeted assessments to help students optimise their preparation.

Relaxed, personalised preparation

All these measures are in place to ensure that every student approaches the exams with peace of mind, and with preparation tailored to their needs.

Post-baccalaureate studies at the Lycée International Montessori Athena

For over 25 years, the combination of Montessori pedagogy and the academic requirements of our school has proved its worth. The development of essential qualities such as self-confidence, autonomy, adaptability and creativity, combined with a rigorous pedagogical framework and an excellent level of English and Spanish, enables students to build solid, well-balanced profiles. This global approach, which has proved its worth over the years as students have prepared for and passed their baccalauréat at our school, is now opening the doors to top-level universities in France and abroad.

FAQ - Lycée International Montessori Athena

Frequently asked questions

Find the answers to the questions most frequently asked by parents

From what age do you welcome children?

We welcome children from the age of 2, with the possibility of a nap.

My child does not speak English. Can he or she attend the Lycée International Montessori Athena?

Yes, we welcome students of all language levels. The teachers offer a personalised programme according to each student's level.

At what age can my child start learning a second language?

From the age of 2, children receive bilingual teaching in the form of 4 half-days in English and 4 half-days in French (2 mornings and 2 afternoons so that they have as much time in English as in French).

Will our child have to sit the bac or brevet as an independent candidate if he or she is in a non-contractual school?

Absolutely not, our students are registered for these exams by the school just like any other public or public school under contract.

Can our child be registered on Parcoursup?

Of course our students are registered on Parcoursup and we help them through this stage.

Is the baccalauréat or brevet that our child will take the same as for schools under contract?

Of course they do. The only difference is that pupils take all the tests in 1ère and terminale and in 3ème for the brevet, as they are not entitled to continuous assessment.

This is an advantage because, as they are very well prepared for the exam, there is no risk of their results being lowered by a few poor marks in the ongoing tests. This avoids constant stress during the 4th, 3rd, 1st or final year.

Does my child need to be able to speak English to take part in the English club?

Absolutely not, we offer a programme adapted to each person's level and age.

Do I have to register my child for every Wednesday?

No, you can enrol on an à la carte basis and even only for half-days.

Who supervises the children at the English club?

Montessori educators in nursery, primary and collège classes at the Lycée International Montessori Athena, assisted by people in training for the CAP petite enfance at the school.
